Skill Set Overview

A set of skills to follow organisational infection prevention and control policies and procedures, including implementing standard and transmission-based precautions and responding to infection risks in organisations operating in the retail industry.

After completion of the training, staff will be able to confidently:

  • follow standard and additional precautions for infection prevention and control
  • identify infection hazards and assess risks
  • follow procedures for managing risks associated with specific hazards.

Participants will learn a range of skills, including:

  • Hand hygiene practices
  • Effective surface cleaning
  • Use of personal protective equipment
  • Disposal of contaminated waste
  • Hazard identification, control and reporting
  • Appropriate protocols and responses in the event of an incident
  • Knowledge regarding the basis of infection and transmission

At the successful completion of this unit, you will receive a nationally recognised HLTSS00065 Infection Control Skill Set (Retail), Statement of Attainment.

Units of Competency

HLTINFCOV001 Comply with infection prevention and control policies and procedures

Delivery Method

This program is a blended delivery model to be delivered online, face to face in a classroom-based and workplace environment.

Course Duration

  • 8 hours of face-to-face class time
  • 5 hours of online learning
  • 12 hours of work placement

Work Placement

Completion of workplace assessment is scheduled to occur following the online and delivery of class session and simulation. The workplace assessment will be completed at the student place of work.



To achieve the qualification, the student will need to:

  • Successfully complete compulsory practical training and observation in the workplace.
  • Successfully complete all assessment including Online Quiz, Simulation/Observation and Workplace Assessment Guide.

Entry Requirements

This course is open to candidates 16 years of age and over. Candidates seeking to undertake this course must:

  • Be currently employed in Victoria
  • Have not previously completed the individual Skill Set they are seeking to enrol in, or any of the other Infection Control Skill Sets.
  • Be a person currently employed in the retail industry.
  • Be a worker who is eligible to work or volunteer in Australia, irrespective of their citizenship or residency status, with priority given to those working in critical industries.

Course Fees


  • Course Fees include all materials and resources.
  • Please refer to Fee Schedule for Fee Type and Course Fee breakdowns.
  • Please note the tuition fee is waived under Government Subsided Training and eligibility criteria apply.
  • This Skill Set will not count towards the standard Skills First commencement allocations or up-skilling requirements. Hence, this initiative will not impact future Entitlement to Funded Training and will not be taken into account when assessing the highest qualifications held by the individual, the course maximum for the purpose of 'two in a year' and 'two at a time' limits and/or the course maximum for the purposes of the 'two 'courses in...' in a lifetime' criteria.
